"My work oscillates between three zones of research: the energy of fire, the strength of knots and the inexorable passage of time."

Christian Jaccard, of Swiss descent, was born in 1939, in Fontenay-sous-Bois, France. In 1948, he learned the Manuel du gabier, a french book published in 1875, dedicated to sailors and presenting knots, tackles, splices, mooring, how to set up sails, rigging, and campfires. From 1956 to 1960, he studied fine arts at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Bourges, France.
As a color process etcher in a letterpress printing house from 1964 to 1975, he explored processes of impregnation linked to the making of specific tools, which gave rise from 1968 to 1973 to the series Noeuds (Knots) and Couple toile/outil (Canvas/tool couples).
In 1976, he was nominated professor at the Art and Architecture School of Marseille, France. In 1981, he stayed in Brazil, invited by sculptor Frans Krajcberg. In 1983, he obtained a blaster’s license. The following year, he stayed in Italy to further develop the combustion process. Winner of the Villa Kujoyama prize, he lived in Japan in 1994.
Since the 2000's, he has appeared from time to time in industrial wastelands, chapels and other places; this “nomad workshop” has been a new performance at each location that has been recorded with the Tableaux éphémères.
